Step 1

We're back, and I've realized the first step to getting my balcony garden going is cleaning it. I don't use my balcony a huge amount, if we're being perfectly honest. As you can see from the pictures in my previous post, the neighbours are right there, and I also don't have the nicest view:

But I will say, having an apartment that faces trees and other buildings, in the middle of the city, does keep my apartment pretty quiet, which is nice. Anyway, my point is I don't really use the balcony much (though it did come in clutch during the pandemic).

And because I don't use the balcony much, it doesn't get cleaned very often (i.e. only by the rain, never by me). So I think the first thing I need to do is clean it. Obviously, I need to clear out the dead plant pots that I already have out there because I don't want the new plants to be traumatized. But also, I realized around the top of the balcony overhang, there are huge patches of what appear to be bug nests. Are they? Do bugs make nests? They are all around the top of the balcony.

So I'm going to need to find something tall enough and strong enough to clean those off because I am not standing on a chair on my balcony, three floors up. That's just asking for trouble. So if anyone has any ideas of how I can scrub this off, I'm all ears.
