I've got my seeds for the new balcony garden!

If you read the post last week, you'll know that what I actually need to do is clean my balcony because I've got bug nests (or something) everywhere. BUT, it has been really cold lately (yes, I am aware it's January in Switzerland). I had been planning to clean my balcony this weekend, but even though it was sunny it was -8 on Saturday, -7 on Sunday, and that is just too cold for me.

So instead, I went and got my seed packets, which actually ended up working well because they were on sale 3 for 2, so I got nine.

Now, I did do some research about what seeds are easiest to grow, but then I largely ignored that when it came to the actual choosing. But I did learn that there are official maps called Hardiness Zone Maps that help you decipher which plants grow best in your climate. Apparently I'm in Zone 8a, which is the same zone as places like Seattle, Portland and Vancouver. I always think of those places as mild and I don't really think of Zurich as mild but I guess it is and I'm just a wimp.

ANYWAY, after I learned this new information, I looked up what grows well in zone 8a and from that chose vegetables that I like to eat. I also included geraniums and marigolds because apparently their smell keeps pests away.

So, it's obviously still too cold to plant my seeds, but at least now I know I have them ready to go. This is what I chose:

Hopefully next week it will be warm enough for cleaning.
